“Imagine West Side Story without dance, or Smooth Criminal, or anything Madonna has done,” says Julie McDonald, founder of McDonald Selznick Associates, the oldest and largest agency for dancers. Dance has the ability to influence and capture the spirit of the time. Choreographers in the film industry typically operate on work-for-hire contracts without any royalty structure or additional forms of compensation.
Now is the time to discuss the importance of creatives in the industry, especially after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. These strikes have highlighted the need for an inclusive industry that values all artists, including dancers and choreographers. To achieve this, we must understand the role of a choreographer on set. This is why we are creating this film; to open the black box of what the dance industry is and how it operates.
